UDI Conference Printronix Auto ID

Printronix Auto ID recently traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, for this year’s UDI Conference.

From April 24-25, 2018, we met with many different organizations and professionals regarding the new UDI compliance regulation.

David Lundeen (VP of Marketing) and Andy Edwards (Director of Engineering) attended the conference, sharing a booth with our software vendor, Teklynx, a leader in barcode label software.

What is the New UDI Compliance Regulation?

FDA regulations are requiring medical companies to uniquely identify their products with a standard identifier so they can be traced from manufacturing through consumption or disposal.

Ultimately, the goal of the FDA’s unique device identification (UDI) system is to improve patient safety.

While the UDI program is already in play, more and more devices are included in the program based on the FDA compliance schedule. When this program is fully rolled out, the majority of U.S. medical devices will be traceable by its UDI number.

What was Discussed at the Conference?

“There are several stakeholders in this community, and the conference served to update and educate them on the requirements,” said Andy Edwards. “Equipment providers, like Printronix, attended to demonstrate how our solutions can help in the UDI deployment.”

Other attendees included major healthcare organizations, medical device manufacturers, and health distribution/group purchasing organizations.

How can Printronix Auto ID Help with the New UDI Compliance Regulation?

“There was a lot of interest in the ODV-2D verifier product as suppliers need to ensure that UDI barcodes are not only readable, but meet a minimum grade,” Edwards stated.

That’s because the revolutionary new ODV-2D technology includes a built-in data validator that grades 1D and 2D barcodes to ISO standards and stores a detailed report of each transaction.

Another solution that can help with this new regulation is our T6000 and its built-in RFID capabilities. This industrial, high-performance thermal barcode printer is outfitted to not only print on RFID labels but also to encode and verify the RFID data.
