Question: Do you have a model of SV that will work with a model “X” thermal printer?
Answer: We offer interface cables for many popular printers that will allow an SV unit to stop the printer if a bar code problem is detected. These are shown on the RJS price list.

It is possible to work with other printers not included on the price list. Contact RJS technical support for details.

The barcode sizes and desired print speed may affect which SV model is used to meet the application requirements.

Question: How can I tell what’s wrong with my codes if the SV unit stops my printer?
Answer: There are two basic errors that will stop the printer – bar code quality lower than desired, or a damaged bar code that cannot be decoded.

The SV unit indicates these types of errors when it stops the printer. If LED1 is on, there is a bar code quality error.

If LED2 is on, there is a damaged bar code that cannot be decoded.

It is possible to use RJS ScanVision software to report details during a print run. This can indicate problems in better detail.

Question: The SV unit stops my printer (or, in the case of a conveyor application, provides an error indication), but if I can read the bar code with my scanner. Why?
Answer: This could be a system setup problem or a bar code quality problem.

The SV unit is decoding a bar code moving through its beam. If the code is moving too fast for the SV scan rate, or some portions of the code are damaged, it may not be able to be decoded in time, and therefore produce a No Read error condition.

If the bar code is partially damaged, it will be possible to find a good scan line someplace over the area of the code with a hand held scanner that will read.

The SV unit may be programmed to set an error condition for relatively high grade failure threshold which the scanner can easily decode.

Question: Can I analyze ladder bar codes on a thermal printer with an SV unit?
Answer: Yes. The SV unit must be mounted in a rotated orientation to allow the ladder codes to go through the laser beam.

If multiple bar codes are present, only those codes that can be scanned with a single beam path can be analyzed.

Care must be taken to control the paper path out of the printer so the bar codes is flat during the time it is in the laser beam.

There may be some considerations regarding particular interface cables. Contact RJS technical support for details.

Question: Can I analyze both a ladder and picket fence code on the same label with an SV?
Answer: No. By the design of a single line laser, it is not possible to scan bar codes in both orientations with a single SV unit.

It is possible to use multiple SV units together to analyze ladder and picket fence oriented bar codes on the same label. RJS technical support can assist in details.

Question: You offer two types of interfaces – standard and alternate – for Zebra XiII, XiIII and XiIII PLUS printers. Which shall I use?
Answer:If labels are shorter than 1 inch, the alternate kit must be used.

The standard kit has a feature that text only labels will not cause the SV to stop the printer. This is useful in batch runs separated by blank or text only labels.

The standard interface requires the ZPL command for a picket fence oriented bar code ~BY.. be used for any label that contains a bar code to be analyzed.

Question: Can I interface my SV unit with a PLC?
Answer: Yes. PLC units can interface via serial communications or I/O.

SV units have a serial port to transmit analysis and bar code data and also receive host commands.

SV units also have open drain outputs that can be interfaced to PLC inputs to provide status outputs.

The SV sync input can also be interface to a PLC for beam control and No Read detection purposes.

Question: Can I analyze multiple up labels with an SV?
Answer:Yes. This is a unique feature of the SV Series.

In picket fence orientation, the SV automatically can analyze up to four bar codes in its beam width.

Question: Does the SV interface cable interfere with the commands sent to my thermal printer?
Answer: No. The interface kits work with printer input and output signals – not communications to the printer.

Question: Will the SV unit slow down my printer?
Answer: Usually not. SV units scan at speed to keep up with most print functions. The amount of time in the beam is in picket fence orientation the key to conservative operation.

If barcodes are extremely short, it could slow down the printer, but a faster SV model may also be used.

An estimate of conservative print speed can be calculated by measuring the height in inches of the shortest bar of a code on a label. Multiply that by 20 for SV100 models and 40 for SV2000 models. That number becomes the estimated max. print speed to analyze the code. For example, if a code .25 inch high, maximum estimated print speeds are 5 IPS and 10 IPS for SV100 and SV200 units respectively.

NOTE: During setup, ScanVision software should be used to determine actual maximum print speed by assuring at least 5 scans on average are being analyzed for the shortest bar code on a label.

Question: If I mark up a label on my media roll in my printer so it will cause a non-readable barcode, the verifier will stop the printer one label after the bad label. Why doesn’t it stop on the bad label?
Answer: This is typical of the interface kits when printing batches of labels. It is a system timing issue.

When a label is marked up, this causes a No Read condition. No read conditions are detected by using a sync input to the SV unit. The SV unit is programmed to expect the number of bar codes to be analyzed during the sync interval (in the case of thermal printers the number of codes on the label.)

In most interfaces for thermal printers, the start of the next label being printed essentially ends the sync period (and starts the next period). Therefore, the SV unit cannot send the “stop” signal to the printer until the next label has begun to print, resulting in the situation where the printer stops one label late.

NOTE: In many SV output modes used in printer interfaces, an output for a code that has been decoded, but analyzed for poor quality, is sent as soon as the code exits the beam. In this case that “stop” signal is sent to the printer before the next label is started, therefore the printer will stop on the “bad” label.

In on demand applications (where each label stops after being printed) all RJS printer interface kits have setup procedures to make sure the printer will stop on the bad label

Question: Do I need a PC and ScanVision software continuously connected to my SV unit for each printer installation?
Answer: No. The PC and ScanVision software is used to setup the system. After setup, the PC and ScanVision can be disconnected.

If desired, ScanVision can remain connected to monitor and keep records of analyses.

Question: Can ScanVision interface with more than one SV unit?
Answer: No. It is designed for just one serial port interface.
